Candidate for the position of Oifigeach na Gaeilge / Irish Language Officer

Ciaran Cashin

The Irish language has suffered greatly and will continue to suffer if left the way it is. During secondary level education we all learned the history of our nation's language and the failure of the education system to revitalise Irish as a spoken language, this has left many young people discouraged to continue learning the language post secondary level. The way the Irish language is taught in schools is solely to pass an exam and not to bring students to a conversational level by the time they leave secondary school education.

As a fluent speaker, I would strive to bring people together through Irish language. After growing up in Connemara I have been fascinated with the ways that Irish has be taught outside the Gaeltacht. Although I knew the lack of use of the language, it has been a saddening experience to see how badly my language is being represented elsewhere.

Just because this is how things are does not mean that it has to stay like that. If I am elected for the position of Irish language officer I aim to provide more ways in which the Irish language can be used in our college and develop ways where we can all embrace the language in an enjoyable way. Bringing Irish culture and heritage to all who are interested in making Irish much more than just a bad memory.
